Generally fish have three kinds of teeth such as :
- Mandibular teeth/Jaw teeth: the more active predators such as pikes & salmonids have strong jaws and sharp mandibular teeth on them. it also found in fish which scrape their food rocks or fed on invertebrates or crustacea. Five types of mandibular teeth found which are:
- Cardiform teeth
- villiform teeth
- canine teeth
- inciform teeth
- molariform teeth
- Pharyngeal teeth: the most common type of teeth are the pharyngeal teeth. these are situated on the modified fifth gill arch which does not carry gills. e.g. Grass carp, common carp, gold fish.
- Buccal teeth: some fishes have buccal teeth in the mouth to hold the prey and prevent it from escape. e.g. Ctenopharyngodon idella
