Oesophagus:  Predatory species have highly distensible oesophagus. the oesophahus is sparated from the stomach by the cardiac sphincter, which prevents food from breaking out of the stomach. Its epithelial lining is ciliated and is rich in mucus secretory cells.

Mucus secretory cells: These cells, mostly composed of secretory cells employ a so-called “mucosal barrier” that serves as a lubricant and aids in the preservation of the epithelium. Mucus serves  two functions --
  • Mucus act as lubricant
  • Mucus protects the wall of oesophagus from damage during swallowing the food.
Function of oesophagus: It helps to drain out the food to stomach by vibration of the cells.

Buccal cavity : Buccal cavity is used for holding food in the mouth.
